Keyless Entry System
The key fob is equipped with an internal chip that lets it communicate with the receiver module of your car. It's possible that if the key fob suddenly stops working the internal chip has been damaged. This could happen after dropping your key fob, or if another keyfob fails to work. In this instance you can still start your vehicle by pressing the "Start" button on the key fob, if the battery isn't dead.
If the key fob is working, it will send an indication to the receiver module which will inform it which trunk or door is open. The module will then open the correct trunk or door so that you can enter and start the car. The car can also be locked or unlocked by pressing the button on the remote control. Certain systems are intelligent enough to recognize the driver's specific fob, and will automatically lock the vehicle when they leave the vehicle.

Transponder Chip Key
The transponder chip key is a security device that transmits a unique code to the car's immobilizer once it's inserted into the ignition. The immobilizer stops the starter motor, fuel pump motor, and other systems that permit the car to run without the identification code of the transponder chip.
The key is made of all-metal, with a plastic head which houses the transponder. To remove the ignition key, you will need to use a screwdriver in order to get sufficient leverage. After the key has been removed, the user is able view and take off the chip - it appears to be a small black square or a transparent tube. The chip is then positioned on the tape and is attached to the ignition lock, close to the ignition barrel.
Locksmiths can make new key fobs, remotes or proximity chips for a kia Sportage at a fraction the cost you would pay at the dealer.
